Organ - Pipe

Section 23: PIPE ORGAN SOLOS
NOTE Refer to Rules 3, 5 & 17. All classes: OWN CHOICE as specified. Memory not required. Play all repeats. Restricted to non-professional pipe organ students.
PIPE ORGAN AWARDS: $1,000 Gerald Bales Award for winners in Class 2300.
Paul Westermeyer Service and Hymn Playing Awards for Classes 2308 & 2309. Competitors must enter and compete in BOTH of these classes in order to be eligible for an award (4 years of study and over for $1,250, less than 4 years of study for $1,250). Awards will be apportioned based upon the adjudicator's recommendations.
Prize money available for the remaining pipe organ classes at the discretion of the adjudicator.

Prelude and Fugue by J.S. Bach, comparable to the 'Great A Minor' in difficulty AND a contrasting substantial work (not less than six minutes in length) from a different period. A.S.E.

Any work whose composer was born between 1600-1799. A.S.E. Limit 6 - 15 min.

Any major Prelude and Fugue by Bach. A.S.E. Limit 6 - 15 min.

Any work whose composer was born between 1800-1900. A.S.E. Limit 6 - 15 min.

2304 Open - French Romantic
Any major work of the French Romantic Period A.S.E. Limit 6 - 15 min.

Any major work of the German Romantic Period A.S.E. Limit 6 - 15 min.

Any work whose composer was born after 1900. A.S.E. Limit 6 - 15 min.

Own choice of any work or works by one or more Canadian composers  A.S.E. Limit to a maximum of 15 min.

2308 Open - Hymn Playing
Must play two hymns:
 a) Required Hymn one of the two below  
Must use pedal for the bass line.
Must play Introduction and Two-Three verses.
Change registration for each verse.
May solo out the melody in the right hand of One verse.
Last verse reharmonization is encouraged, but not required.
Entrant must indicate which verses will be played when announcing which of the required hymns will be played.
b) Own choice contrasting in style to the required hymn from any current hymnal.
Time Limit: 15 minutes total

2309 Open - Service Playing
Must play Kyrie / Lord Have Mercy, Sanctus / Holy, Holy, Memorial Acclamation or Great Amen, Agnus Dei / Lamb of God from any current hymnal.  
Must be played in that order and each introduced as one would accompany a congregation.
Must use pedal for bass line where appropriate.
Appropriate registration is required.

Any composition for pedals only. A.S.E. Limit 6 - 15 min.

2312 Four Years of Study or Less
Own choice.  A minimum of two contrasting works to a maximum time limit of 15 minutes..

Own Choice: Limit 5 minutes.
May accompany a vocal or instrumental performance. Accompaniment need not be memorized.  Only the pipe organist will be adjudicated.
