Section 93: BANDS
Refer to GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR CHOIRS, BANDS AND ORCHESTRAS in Rules and Regulations.

NOTE
Refer to Rules 17 & 50.
If scheduling permits, all BAND classes will be held in a Secondary School. Afternoon sessions will be held from 3:30/4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and evening sessions from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m.. No bands will perform before 3:30 p.m. each day.

P9300 Secondary School - Challenge Class "A" - Winner Martin Boundy Memorial Trophy
RULES FOR CHALLENGE CLASS BANDS:
1. Challenge Classes are open to any band performing in the A, B or C class. Challenge Class 9300 is open to competitors who are entered and have competed in Band Class "A" 9302 at the current Festival with the same ensemble. Challenge Class 9301 is open to competitors who are entered and have competed in Band Class "B" 9303 or Band Class "C" 9304 at the current Festival with the same ensemble.
2. Conductors should choose pieces that best showcase the strengths of their ensemble, at an appropriate level for their group.
3. Each entrant will be required to prepare TWO selections. BOTH selections will be performed. The lyric selection does not have to come from the OBA list, but must reflect the difficulty level of the repertoire represented on that list.
4. The conductor's condensed or full score of each selection MUST be given to the adjudicators before the competition begins. Bands submit TWO copies.

TWO selections:
a) Own choice - to be at a comparable level to "A" or "B" class (depending on the class entered).
b) One lyric selection: "A" class to be minimally at the level comparable with 300-400 on the OBA Lyric list. "B/C" class to be minimally at the level comparable with 200-300 on the OBA Lyric list.


NOTE
Band Classes 9302, 9303, 9304, 9318 & 9319, Stage Band Classes 9321 & 9322
1. The only difference between these classes is the difficulty of the test piece: "A" being the most difficult and "C" the least difficult. A conductor may choose to enter the class considered most suitable for the band he/she conducts.
2. A school may enter bands in all of these classes provided that no player participates in more than one of these classes.
3. As a warm-up, bands may play a hymn tune or chorale. Limit 2 min. This selection will not be adjudicated.

a) Own choice. - to be at a comparable level to Grade 9/10 class selection.
b) One lyric selection - to be at a comparable level to Grade 9/10 class selection.

BOTH selections WILL be performed.

For Classes 9321 and 9322 refer to SECTION 93 notes 1 to 4.
In addition the following shall be considered the maximum Stage Band instrumentation in Classes 9321 and 9322: trumpets - 5, trombones - 5, saxophones - 6, rhythm section - guitar, bass or tuba, piano, drums and one extra percussion, when necessary. Additional instrumentation may be used ONLY according to the needs of the scores or arrangements chosen for performance.
